How Cannabis Retailers Can Strengthen Storefront Security

Cannabis retailers run a largely cash-based business, which makes them a target. Strengthening storefront security protects your product, your clientele, and your revenue—and much of it is required by state licensing rules.

Know your vulnerabilities. Robberies and burglaries have climbed across the cannabis industry, but they’re only part of the picture: dispensaries also have to guard against internal theft by employees and risks from customers. Effective storefront security addresses all three.

Install high-security door locks. Doors are the primary point of entry, so commercial-grade locks are the best defense against unauthorized access. Don’t stop at the front door—secure side entries and interior doors leading to restricted areas like the vault.

Fortify windows and glass. Most burglars stage smash-and-grab attacks through glass. Security bars, grilles, or security film make it far harder to breach a window or shatter a display case and walk off with product.

Position surveillance cameras correctly. Most states mandate 24/7 video surveillance with footage retained for a set period (often 90 days) and cameras covering entrances, sales floor, and storage. Beyond compliance, visible cameras deter criminals, capture footage to identify perpetrators, and document employee theft. Pair them with software security features that prevent cyber attacks.

Employ security guards. Budget permitting, on-site guards add a visible deterrent, monitor customer behavior, remove hazards as they arise, and can provide after-hours coverage when no one else is around.

Implement a cash storage solution. Because limited banking access keeps dispensaries cash-heavy, how you store and transport cash directly affects security. Build a streamlined system around commercial safes for in-house storage to cut theft risk.

No single measure is enough on its own. Combine these steps with a security-minded hiring process, keep customers out of unauthorized areas, and stay vigilant about everyday safety practices.

Storefront Security Checklist

MeasureWhy It Matters
High-Security Door LocksFirst line of defense against forced entry after hours.
Fortified Windows & GlassDeters smash-and-grab attempts on storefronts.
Surveillance CamerasRequired for compliance and critical for investigations.
Security GuardsVisible deterrent and on-site response to incidents.
Cash Storage SolutionProtects the cash that cannabis retailers can’t avoid handling.

An Honest Take

Physical security and data security are two halves of the same job. Locks and cameras protect the store; a secure, access-controlled dispensary POS system protects the cash flow, customer records, and compliance trail behind it. For details on the digital side, see POS security features.
