Bureau of Cannabis Control Hosts Online Webinar
When California first set up its cannabis rules, the state’s regulator hosted webinars with the California Cannabis Industry Association. These sessions walked operators through the new license rules. Each one ran about an hour. They served retailers, testing labs, distributors, and small businesses alike.
In the recording below, then-chief Lori Ajax explains the paperwork needed for both temporary and annual licenses. It is still a useful primer on how the system took shape.
Application Process
The presentation also walks through the online application process for cannabis businesses. At the time, temporary cannabis-event licenses still required a written application. That step later moved online as the state expanded its digital licensing portal.
Live Q&A
Beyond the overview of cannabis regulations and the application process, Ajax answered questions in a live Q&A. Industry professionals asked about premises qualifications, the differences between medical and adult-use, local jurisdiction, and applicants with felony convictions.
Notably, she said the regulator was flexible toward applicants with past felony convictions, and she urged them to apply. The broader goal, she stressed, was to bring existing operators into the legal market.
A Common-Sense Approach
Overall, California‘s regulator has taken a measured approach to licensing. Importantly, any rule change still goes through a public comment period before it is final. That way, every factor gets weighed. Today this role belongs to the California Department of Cannabis Control, which absorbed the old Bureau of Cannabis Control in 2021.
We encourage marijuana businesses to watch the webinar below to learn more about the business license application process and how California’s rules shape day-to-day operations for your retailer.
