In Detroit, Psychedelics Decriminalization Is Approved
The measure says that Detroit will “decriminalize to the fullest extent permitted under Michigan law the personal possession and therapeutic use of Entheogenic Plants by adults.” Unofficial results at first showed that the law leads by a margin of 61% to 39%.
The new regulation will also “make the personal possession and therapeutic use of Entheogenic Plants by adults the city’s lowest law-enforcement priority.”
Michigan has become the center of psychedelics reform in recent months.
Measures Across The Country
The Ann Arbor City Council has already decided to make such psychedelics as psilocybin, ayahuasca, and DMT the lowest priority of the city. They also declared September Entheogenic Plants and Fungi Awareness Month.
After local authorities approved the decriminalization last year, the Washtenaw County announced that the office will not convict of possessing entheogenic plants and fungi, “regardless of the amount.”
In September, the Grand Rapids City Council also supported the decriminalization of a range of psychedelics such as psilocybin and ayahuasca.
While some activists are working to decriminalize psychedelics, other senators have introduced a bill legalizing the possession, growing, and delivery of such psychedelics as psilocybin and mescaline.
Activists throughout the country are pushing for psychedelics reform.
For instance, in October, lawmakers in Easthampton, Massachusetts, approved the decriminalization of some of the entheogenic substances and drugs.
In April, Northampton City Council resolved that the government or police will not enforce laws to chase people possessing or using entheogenic plants and fungi. In Massachusetts, Somerville and Cambridge have also moved to psychedelics decriminalization.
In February, Massachusetts lawmakers supported two bills. One of them would withdraw criminal penalties for drug possession. The second bill would allow studying entheogenic substances with the purpose of further legalization and regulation of them.
California introduced a bill legalizing psychedelics possession, but it was put on pause until 2022.
